The school year is winding down so frightfully fast. I can’t believe nine months has already swept past me. Yet, although I cannot believe my freshman year of college is already almost over, it seems like forever since last summer and longboarding adventures with my Wisconsin “gang”.

This week I had half of my finals, and next Monday and Tuesday the rest will attack me. I can’t wait until Wednesday, when I can pack up my room and head for Wisconsin. Thursday I’m off to Florida for a relaxing Mother’s Day celebration on the beach (I have a hard life, I know).

concentration

Beginning Tennis, Cycling, Beginning Badminton, Running for Fitness—Union College offers nice variety when it comes to choosing a Physical Education class. With a total of four credits required, I decided to bump those out of the way early.

This semester I’m taking Concepts of Wellness, which is worth two credit hours and is a required class for all students. This involves learning about dietary and lifestyle health, as well incorporating weekly aerobic exercise and behavior modification projects. If this wasn’t school, it might actually be something I’d find interesting and useful. Instead, my focus this semester has been shot, and I can’t wait until summer.

I know my grades won’t be up-to-par this semester, but I’ve made a resolution that I will become a model student for the next three years. Although my stokage isn’t that high when it comes to thinking of all the studying I’ll have to do. Some classes I’m taking next year have me ready for next fall to come swiftly. Which brings us back to square one—or is that course one?

I’m pre-registered for Beginning Golf, which is sure to be an interesting adventure. Read the rest of this entry »

I used to love John Mayer’s song “Waiting on a world to change,” until I actually paid attention to the lyrics (that and five seconds couldn’t go by without hearing it on the radio. Overkill much?). Why would I want to wait for the world to change when I can be changing it myself?

Yet, as much as I have the desire, it feels like I rarely change the world at all. How can I help a situation that either I don’t know much about or is located millions of miles away? Usually, it seems most things I wish I could make a difference in are both at the same time. That’s part of the reason I’m interested in joining the Peace Corps after graduation.

Wait
. I don’t need to wait till 2011 or sail across the sea to turn the world upside down. I’m at Union College—there are more than enough opportunities to start a revolution.

Groundwork of a dream
I peeked curiously into the unlit room. My fingers pressed against the cool glass, small fingers barely making a smudge on the spotless area. It was the fall of 2005, and I was visiting Union College for the first time.
A junior in high school, I wanted to visit all of the major Adventist colleges in the U.S. before I made my decision on where to attend. Union was first on the list, and my mother drove us the eight hours to attend Preview Days for prospective students.

While visiting campus, I was wandering toward (or possibly from?) Union Market when I passed a small room directly across from the welcome desk in the Ortner Center. Peering inside, I saw beautiful paintings of birds and wildlife. Read the rest of this entry »

I’d already picked out my deep, sedated blue top with delicate lace modestly peaking up from what would have been a plunging neckline. Oh, and then there were those amazing heels Sara was letting me borrow. I got butterflies in my stomach as I thought about my rendezvous set for later that evening. Why else would I be dressing up? I only get fancy like once or twice a year, unless jeans and a t-shirt can be considered the new ritzy. But last night, well, this that something different altogether.

My fingertips tingled with anticipation. Makeup? Check. Hair? Well, I just checked it because it’s not like anyone can ever tame it. Face flushed from excitement? Check. Ready for the interview? Check.

Why do you look so surprised? Where’d you think I was off to—a date? Last night was my interview with the newly elected Associate Student Body executive officers and sponsors. I’m hoping to be hired as The ClockTower editor for next school year.
