“Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you…” Jeremiah 1:5
I know this was written specifically to Jeremiah, who was called by God to try one last time to convince the chosen people to act like chosen people before Babylon came as the reminder of what would happen if they didn’t! But I also believe in secondary applications to most if not all of the Bible!
I think He knew the same about me before I was born. I believe I am that special in His eyes too. And so are you! That being said, I also believe the second part of the specific message of specialness to Jeremiah is equally applicable to me (and you perhaps?!) “Before you were born I set you apart.” It’s special to be “known” by God; it’s even more special to be “called” by God! Set apart for a special purpose. Jeremiah’s was identified; “I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.” Mine isn’t always that clear, but then this story is not a daily diary, written at the very moment it transpired, that would reflect that Jeremiah knew EXACTLY what is calling was from the very first moment. He looked back and recorded what he remembered and what God directed him to that was important.
1. I knew you
2. I set you apart
3. I appointed you
Jeremiah remembers arguing with God, “I do not know how to speak; I’m only a child.” He argued. God’s response? “Don’t be afraid, I am with you and will rescue you.” Even if it WAS clear Jeremiah wasn’t “sure.” But God “assured” him that what He knows and who He sets apart and appoints, He will take care of. Not the way I want to be taken care of perhaps, but taken care of the way GOD knows is best. It comes back again to trust, outside myself, that I am special in God’s eyes and that He has something special for me to do- even if I don’t think so!
That’s why, I believe, God started with the assurance that He is in charge and knew me LONG before I knew myself; that He had a plan for me before I took my first breath; that He has something for me to do that will bless His universal plan for all mankind. AND that He will be with me and take care of me, so I don’t need to worry.
That’s the calling I search for. Check out my quote for the day. I’ve been doing a bit of reviewing of early church history lately and came across this quote from an early church father! I think it fits.
Have a great day believing in and searching for His calling in your life,
