“A woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
The final chapter in Proverbs is credited to King Lemuel, whoever he is! Some think it might be another name for Solomon but I don’t know! This whole chapter is about a “good wife,” but what I saw this morning was who taught all this “wisdom” to Solomon, or Lemuel, or whoever! It was his mother! That’s what it says in verse one. Maybe it was sort of like one of those “mother-son” talks some of you guys experienced (or father-daughter talks because I think, with minimal effort you ladies could turn the gender specific language the other way and maybe learn something about how to choose a good husband as well!) Or maybe it’s even bigger than a husband/wife issue; maybe anyone could look at this chapter and see qualities that make a good person, friend, OR spouse. Just a thought. That’s the direction I want to take this morning.
First “mom” gives her son a bit of advice for himself. If you’re going to find a good friend, maybe even a spouse, then you must BE a good person/friend/potential spouse. Then it describes that “ideal” person who comes into life, summarily defined with one word- character- what I am when I don’t have to be, or in this particular case, what I am to others when I don’t have to be.
The most defining quality of that ideal person has little to do with what they look like or what they say, but what they do to and for others. This is what mom told Lemuel to look for in a wife, or a husband, or friend. If that’s what’s being looked for, then that’s what I would like to be. And when I focus on being rather than finding, I might just be surprised by what I find!
Have a great day focusing on being God’s ideal,

PPPPS Happy “Eve of All Saints Day” by the way! November 1 was “All Saints Day” and the night before was a time to “hallow” the memory of all those good people who had gone before them with the lighting of candles and the bringing of food to make the spirits happy! So they would gather at the church (where the cemeteries were) and remember. Martin Luther saw it as an opportune moment to make a statement so on this date (495 years ago) he nailed his 95 theses to the church door in Wittenberg! And YOU thought it was all about trick-or-treating! Candles ended up in pumpkins, food turned into candy and the “saints” turned into kids! And now you know the rest of the story!
