Sterling Principle #8
“Don’t accept a meal from a tightwad; don’t expect anything special. He’ll be as stingy with you as he is with himself.” Proverbs 23: 6-8
The stingy person that I see in this proverb is the kind of person who is more interested in the “return on his investment” than he is in the “kindness shown with the gift.” Motive is a huge indicator as I journey with Christ. I have to use EXTREME care because motive is an inner thing that I have to be VERY careful about assessing in others and very intentional about applying to myself. Apparently, when I do see it in others, I need to be careful, but for this proverb I choose to look more closely at myself.
One version I looked at this morning goes on to “define” the stingy person. It says, “His words are with you but his heart is not.” Wow, that one hit home. I can talk a good talk but do I walk a good walk? THAT is my question today. I want my life to reflect an attitude of caring for others without the need to be able to measure personal gain as a result of that caring. I want to give because it’s good to give, not because of what I can get in return. I like the image I see when I visualize a world full of that kind of caring. I may have to wait until heaven for the image to become complete reality, but hey, why not get started now with my personal fulfillment of that image!?
Have a great day walking and talking the non-stingy way,
