“I have fought a good fight; I have FINISHED the course…” 2 Timothy 4:7

Well, there’s the school year! All that’s left now is graduation! (And maybe an exam or two today for some of you!) Thank you everyone for another amazing year. I can’t say I’m not looking forward to a little break; but I can say that in a couple weeks I’ll be ready for you all to be back again!! J But don’t worry; I’m not lobbying to change the school calendar to start again later this month. I’ll just be all the more excited when you get back in August.

My last GMU, completing my 12th year of this devotional journey for me and illustration to you of God’s faithfulness, ends with Paul coming to the end of something in his life too. For us it’s a school year; for Paul it’s his last epistle and he’s addressing it to his young friend, his spiritual “son,” Timothy who some believe was about your age. This book contains my favorite verse in the Bible (1:12), which is one of my favorite songs, which offers me the core of my spiritual assurance. I KNOW WHOM I have believed (Jesus) and am persuaded that HE IS ABLE to keep what I ENTRUSTED to Him. So if I trust HIM with my life I can KNOW that He WILL take care of it because I have put the time into the relationship of knowing HIM enough to have that level of confidence and assurance. So because I know HIM and I trust HIM I know that as I “entrust” each of you to His care and keeping that He IS able to keep you. So I’m doing that again today!

And as I come to the end, to have the assurance that the “crown of life” which He has stored up for me and for you will in fact be “awarded” to me and to you I find four criteria that might just be a good focus for the summer:

1. I fight a good fight
2. I finish the race
3. I keep the faith
4. I long for His appearing

So have a great summer. If you are graduating then I pray for you as you launch out into the “real world” (whatever that is!) equipped with professional training and hopefully a spiritual worldview that will affect how you live the rest of your life. If you are not a senior then I pray for you as you use your summer for a little break, a little fiscal responsibility so you can come back in the fall J, and a focus on discovering God’s plans for your life. May you “fight” and “finish” and “keep” and “long for” SO THAT the ultimate reward of eternal life becomes your greatest short and long term goal.

Have a great day (and a great summer). “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with your life.” (Last verse from Paul in the Bible!)

Final Quote for the day
“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
