“Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
As I write my last GMU for the semester, I’m continuing my journey through the Bible looking for the texts that I want to keep in my memory as tools to reinforce my choices and methods for living for God. I came across the story of Samuel looking for a replacement for King Saul. This famous verse was originally written as Samuel kept trying to pick one of David’s brothers and God kept saying, “not this one.” He was looking for something more than Samuel was looking for. Outside appearance apparently is not all bad because, almost humorously, when David came in to the room Samuel describes him as “ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features!” And yet God still chose him! But God looks for more than what is on the outside; there is something more important than what I see. It’s what I AM that matters most to God. And that is comforting to know and encouraging because I can continue to improve what I am on the inside, but I can only deteriorate on the outside. It’s good to know what’s important to God and what can be and should be important to me.
Have a great day focusing on the most important. I’ll be back January 8!
