It’s November 5; Good Morning Union
“Choose for yourself this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
One more important text I found in the book of Joshua that will be a good one to remember. Its context is Joshua’s farewell speech to the leaders of God’s people and his challenge is to stay faithful to God. Three things make this reminder important for me today.
- “Choose for yourself”- he reminds me that I have a responsibility and a need to take a look around me and all the options of “things’ that are distracting me and vying for my attention, and decide what I am going to do with the Lord. Israel was being distracted by other gods according to the verse. I wonder what I am being distracted by?
- “This day”- I can’t put it off. I need to decide what roll God is going to play in my life “today” and every day I believe.
- “But as for me and my house…”- If I need help I can look at the life of Joshua, the leader of God’s people, who realized success, I believe, because he had “chosen for himself,” and he had done it “this day,” and he KNEW what his decision was—“As for me and my house we will serve the Lord.”
Joshua saw clearly God’s leading in his life and he came to the end of his life, not having made a “last minute” decision to finally give his life to God, but he lived a life of choosing—every day—who would be Lord of his life. And he was blessed by God and used in a mighty way to serve Him. I want nothing less for my life. I want nothing less for your life either.
So have a great day choosing for yourself whom you will serve… as for me and my house we will serve the Lord.
