“No temptation has taken you that is not common to man, and God is faithful…” 1 Corinthians 10:13
A most amazing thing happened to me this morning! I was walking through the Bangkok Airport at 5:30am to catch my flight to Cambodia and I looked up and saw a Project Impact shirt!! And there, with a group of 6 other SMs, were Kaylea Blackburn and Michelle Riley, our two SMs serving with Adventist Frontier Missions in Laos! They weren’t supposed to be traveling until next month but things worked out and they all came early! What a shock. I didn’t think I was going to be able to see them on this trip and all of a sudden, there they were. They said that just 5 minutes before we met they were talking about the fact that they had heard I was going to be in Bangkok and they said jokingly, “Wouldn’t it be something if we saw him!” It’s a small world out there! They send their greetings to everyone back at Union, and I was able to pray with them before they boarded their flight to Laos (at the gate right next to mine!) Ok, enough of the travel log-on to GMU!
Whether or not you are joining me on the journey of memorization this year, I want to highly recommend this text as a source of strength and encouragement. I’m going to break it down into the parts I see and place the emphasis where it has been most helpful to me:
“NO temptation has taken me that is not common to man”
When tempted I often think that mine is unique or unusual or the exception that no one else has had to deal with quite like me. That gives me a little excuse in case I need it! But it’s not true- sin is sin- it’s been here since Eve and it will be here to the end.
“And God IS faithful”
As surely as God provided a way for Adam and Eve, He provides a way for me. He does not give up or reject me just because I am tempted or am wrestling with temptation. He is faithful, whether I am or not.
“He will NOT allow me to be tempted above which I am able”
I’m a sinner, I can’t change that., I can’t keep from sinning…. NOT! If this promise is true, and I believe it is, then IF I am being tempted- with ANYTHING- God will NOT give me anything that I cannot handle, as long as I get the next part right.
“But WILL with the temptation provide a way of escape”
GOD provides the way of escape, not me! THAT is where I often get confused. I think that I have the strength or internal fortitude to defeat temptation, but it is GOD not me that provides the way of escape. THAT is why I need to focus on my connection with Him. Without it I will ultimately loose.
“That I WILL be able to stand”
But with God I WILL be able to stand!!
I don’t have to keep sinning! I probably, at least occasionally will, though I hope not, because I am still a sinful human being and I’m living in a sin-filled world. But I don’t have to! None of it is new-sin is sin- BUT God is faithful-and for EVERY temptation to sin He provides a way of escape. THAT is a pretty amazing God!
Have a great day discovering more and more of the potential victory already available through Him.
