We have 4 Elementary and 3 Secondary teachers graduating from the Union College Education Program in December. They are:

Secondary Student Teachers – Fall 2008

The Secondary Student Teachers are well into their school year by now. They began with pre-school week responsibilities, will shadow their Cooperating Teacher for two weeks and then gradually assume responsibility to teach four or five classes on their own. Three of them are already teaching their first subject. The Cooperating Teachers supervise their and make suggestions to help them “learn the ropes.” Their last day of student teaching is Friday December 19.

This year there are nine student teachers assigned to 15 Cooperating Teachers.

Naomi Bruette, Music Education major K-12, teaches vocal music at North Star High School and Norwood Park Elementary School.

Daniel Cress, PE & Religious Education major, teaches at College View Academy.

Katie Hudson, Math Education major, teaches at Southeast High School.

Lisa Kemper, biology Education major, teaches science subjects at College View Academy.

Allison Koch, Math Education major, teaches at Northeast High School.

Ben Santiago, Art Education K-12 major, teaches at both East High School and Eastridge Elementary School.

Eric Schoonard, Math Education major, teaches at Norris High School.

Adam Shipowick, History Education major, teaches at East High School.

Jacob Smith, History Education major, teaches at Dakota Adventist Academy.

Adam and Eric will graduate in December 2008. The rest will continue coursework in spring and graduate in May 2009.

First Rotation as a Teacher

The students in EDUC 458-Methods in Religion, Health, Science and Social Studies are teaching their first rotation in elementary schools.

The Teaching Certificate

Upon graduation from the Education Program at Union College, new teachers qualify for a Nebraska Department of Education Teacher’s Certificate, which allows them to teach in their endorsement area in the State of Nebraska and an SDA Certificate for the North American Division of the SDA church.

If a graduate takes a position in the public school system in another state, they must apply to the department of education in that state for a certificate since each state has their own Rules & Regulations. Most states expect that a graduate will obtain a certificate from the state in which they graduated. Therefore, each teacher who graduate with an Education degree from Union College is encouraged to apply during the last semester of teacher training.
